Do you want someone else to build it for you? Most domain packages come with a site builder that is very simple to use.

OK, Here is the breakdown of Mortgage Websites depending on your needs:
Free Websites:
As was posted in the above post, most domain registration companies offer a free build it yourself website
Also Yahoo offers a free page for people who don't have a website: see this link: http://listings.local.yahoo.com/Templated Mortgage Websites:
There are a number of templeted mortgage website providers that offer all the tools, templates, email, content etc.... They are not rankable websites, but good online brochures for people who want a presence online, but are not looking to generate business via the web . See the top companies below:
A La Mode: http://www.alamode.com/products/Mortgage/default.aspx
Meyers Internet: http://www.meyersinternet.com/products/webwiz_pkg/
Lion Inc: http://www.lionmts.com/section_websites/websites.html?ref=lioninc2CUSTOM Mortgage Websites:
We offer custom mortgage websites which are completely rankable in the search engines. They include a custom design, custom content, and third party mortgage tools. This approach is not easy, cheap or quick, however with our solution, you are building a foundation on the internet which will only strenghen over time. To be successful with a custom website, you must be commited to the process, be patient in regard to seeing a return on your investment, and be able to contribute to the process. If people tell you that you can start generating leads overnight and are not talking about Pay-Per-Click advertising, they are telling you a fish story.

Do you host your sites or does he need to get his own domain hosting package?
I would just have them build it for you then you can use their site builder software to make changes if that is the way they build your sites chief.?
It takes weeks to months to do-it-yourself even if they have a nice site builder you can use yourself. I think you could figure out how to update the site and change things around once they build it for you. Invest that extra time into origination since you are putting them to work for you.
But, I guess the most important question to ask before making this decision is what do you want your site to do for you? If you just want a page to put on your card so people can see more about your qualifications and such then a free one will work and be less than 1 hour of work to type in your info.

I agree 100%. You really need toknow what you want your website to accomplish. If it is a business card online, a free website builder will work just fine.
If you want the website to provide basic mortgage information, calculators and an online application to people whom you meet through your own marketing efforts, a templated website will work just fine.
However, if over time, you want your website to generate business for you from the internet, then a custom website is what you should invest in.
As I said in the previous posts, Custom websites are not cheap. Whereas you can get a templated website for between $600-$1000, a custom website will run you about $5,000 to create, and then about $200 per month in ongoing online marketing efforts. I have seen people spend $20,000 to build a custom website, however a well designed, well optimized basic website is a good starting point.
If you are lucky and find an sole proprietor, who knows design, develpment and SEO, you could get the same site above for about $2,000.
It's not a matter of finding someone to build you a custom website, its finding someone whom is knowledgeable and experienced in all the above areas that is the hard part. Designers are a dime a dozen, Developers are a dime a dozen, and SEO Professionals are a dime a dozen.
If you are serious, you need to either speak with companies whom can provide you all three aspects or an individual whom can provide all the above well. Good Luck
BTW, we host all sites we develop on our servers for SEO reasons.

I think you are geting a lot of really good, honest information here.
Having managed several mortgage companies I always found it very difficult to find a good/ reliable web or IT guy.
Hence I decided instead of spending thousands I would get into design myself - check out the sight in my profile/ signature and also the link to the Property website which I also created...
The mortgage site only took me a day, though the Property website took more like a month due to the content...
review my sites and get back to me...

I like your page. You did a very good job given the tools available to you and professional training.
However, I would not use a free hosting package for a legitimate business if you are trying to get leads out of the site. If you just want a reference point for your customers then it is not so bad. Still the godaddy banner saying your site was free is a turn off and an immediate question of whether you are successful or trustworthy.
Also you need a SSL certificate as I do on mine.
I host with Network Solutions and it is 11.99 per month. They have 24/7 tech support via phone and are one of the largest and oldest hosting companies.

Good Looking out. Actually we do have a SSL...though yes need to add lock symbol. Am currently upgrading site & hosting - so that doesn't appear. Though I was waiting to see if the free google adds brought any extra visitors...

I would always suggest a custom built website for 2 main reasons:
1. it can be amended/ added to as your business grows
2. Good for search engines if coded correctly
