A self cert secured loan (in the UK) requires no verification of your income (ie no pay slip - if you’re employed). The self-employed don’t have to have up-to-date accounts to apply for a self certification secured loan. You can self certify your income. A self-cert loan is not always available from all High street lenders. You also take a secured personal loan (http://www.ask4loan.co.uk) if you need high loan amount.

and what exactly goes on for a mortgage over there? What are the interest rates like when purchasing a home?

This is an interesting subject. Many self employed people without a regular wage or salary are looking for mortgage finance. One problem is that they are being exploited and misled by disreputable firms and then let down when it comes to the crunch of getting the mortgage. And the issues you raise are relevant to people all over the world who are in this situation. When I’m talking to people in the UK who are looking for a mortgage I usually recommend a company I know from personal experience, called InterestingMortgages.co.uk - They have special schemes for all kinds of people, whatever their circumstances. They’re very helpful and reliable and have a good reputation.
