hi, i am 18 years of age and am looking to purchase a duplex, i plan to live in one unit and rent the other, i was wondering how old you need to be to have a mortgage in new york, at 18 will i be able to have a mortgage. i have a good steady job paying approx $55,000 a year. any help will be appreciated. thank you in advance mx_ell

There is no age requirement other than being 18 years old. If they denied you a loan because you were only 18 that would violate federal laws for discrimination.

As long as you qualify you will be fine. Good luck with the duplex.

18 should be fine, but at 18 you may not have enough credit built up. Considering you need to be 18 to open any tradelines, you may not have enough credit history.

in this case you could ask your parents to co-sign, some lenders will allow you to have a guarantal!

you can try to buy a house,
there are laws in which they cannot discriminate do to your age
however
in todays world, any banks or lenders underwriter will find any reason to kill your deal.
they could even kill your deal and not give you a reasonable explanations.

sometimes they will bull**** you and tell you that you need 10 grand in the bank. just stupid reasons.
good luck on buying it. itll take like 2 months and an extra week or two do to your age even if you do get a mortgage
